The following magnetic contour maps for an area at Ft Carson, Colorado in the U.S.,show the comparison
between single sensor surveys versus using the gradiometer option to remove near-surface geologic effects
and improve resolution.
The single sensor survey data was acquired with a sensor line spacing of 0.75m, and a sensor height of
0.5m above ground level. The gradiometer survey used two vertical sensors, 0.5m and 1.0m above ground
level, respectively. The sensors were mounted on a two-wheeled, non-magnetic cart, pulled at fast
walking speed. The navigation of the cart and sensor positioning was accomplished using a 2 cm accurate
laser range finding device, however sub-metre DGPS positioning can also be employed for other larger,
more regional geological surveys.
The removal of the surface clutter and the sharpening of the targets is clearly evident in the gradiometer
data. The combination of the cart, laser positioning system and fast-sampling, high sensitivity vertical
gradiometer G-858 Cesium magnetometer sensors, resulted in a very high quality, fast acquisition field system.
